Ah the morning ‘routine’ (I use the term loosely). Every week day morning I’m whirling around in a vortex of mascara, nappies, dry shampoo, Weetabix and nursery bags, sucking up anything and everything in my path. The whirlwind eventually spits me out a harassed woman on the edge at my desk by 9am feeling like I’ve done a day’s work already.
And every god damn day I convince myself I’m going to be organised. Enough of the madness; tomorrow I will be prepared. Here’s what I promise myself I will do that evening:
- Iron my work clothes
- Wash and dry my hair
- Make a packed lunch
- Get Willow’s nursery clothes out ready
- Pack her nursery bag
- Get into bed by 10pm
What could possibly go wrong?
By 5pm my resolution is waning, I’m tired, I’m hungry, I have to collect Willow from nursery and the whole play, tea, bath and bed charade is looming in front of me. So here’s what actually happens:
- We usually don’t get to eat our evening meal until after 8pm, fraught from bedtime negotiations and attempting to put the house back together.
- I’m still up at 11pm in a vegetative state watching some rubbish on TV mentally chastising myself that I should have gone to bed an hour ago. I still don’t move. Hair is not washed or dried. Idiot.
- I have to get up at 6:30am, knackered because of the pointless TV watching, but this is the only way I’ll get my hair washed and dried and a smattering of makeup applied before Willow wakes up.
- I grab clothes of the ‘clean’ pile that look the least crumpled.
- I consider making a sandwich for my lunch then Willow will launch her breakfast everywhere and the thought is forgotten only to be regretted later on when I’m stuck with a crusty cheese sandwich from the canteen at work.
- I wear my dressing gown over my work clothes to prevent being covered in Weetabix, snot, and or toothpaste. The result is slightly crumpled clothes now look like they have been trampled on by a rhino.
- I remember to pack Willow’s nursery bag as we are leaving the house but only because I see it hanging on her hook by the door and am reminded to do so.
- I run out the door, wrestle Willow into her car seat and vow that I’m going to be more organised that night.
Sound familiar? I’m sure a lot of you can relate to this morning shambles. People tell me it will get easier. Whatever.
Any suggestions for getting my ass organised? Or am I a lost cause – you can say it, we’re friends.

Thanks lovely – you have to laugh don’t you? I’m sat in front of the tv right now with no intention of washing my hair. Idiot! 😂

I’m loving the wearing of a dressing gown over work clothes to protect from flying food and stcky fingers and noses.

I don’t think there’s really any way to get more organized short of growing more hours in the day. Let’s face it, you’re probably already not getting enough sleep or “me” time so giving up any more of that just to iron some clothes is silly. I say go in to work rumpled! #EatSleepBlogRT

Thanks, Confessions of a working mum, for your post. It seems like you are doing a great job already! I agree with Heather. Don’t iron. Usually if you hang up your clothes shortly after they dry they won’t need ironing. If you can manage to hang out/lay out your clothes overnight before work, they should look fine. Also, cooking in your crock pot is a great way to pull together easy-to-make meals that will be ready to eat when you arrive home. Frozen and canned foods can often be prepared quickly and well. Trader Joe’s is a great place for frozen meals, inexpensive nuts, nut butters, chocolate, eggs, milk, produce, breads, meat, fish, chicken, and more. The quality is usually outstanding and the prices are great! Blessings on you and your family. They are fortunate to have you!

Thank you so much for this lovely message! One pot cooking is definitely the way to go, especially in this cold weather. And no to ironing- I’ll definitely be taking this idea on board!

Love this! Isn’t there something about that 5pm time where you suddenly are uninspired to do all those things you’ve thought about all day while you were at work? The exact same happens to me. My girls are older now so they (finally) dress themselves and pack their own bags before we leave the house. It’s not without a ton of prompting (and checking that they actually did it!) but it does get a smidge easier.

I’m missing the organised gene – it must be hereditary as my mum is the same. There’s no hope for Willow! x

Great post. When I’m working in the office I’m out the door at 6:15am but when I’m working at home and trying to get my son to pre-school it’s as much as I can do not to scream if truth be told. Especially if it’s a Monday – ugh. #eatsleepblogrt

I’m gonna just quote Nike here “Just do it”. I know easier said than done but every book, article etc I’ve read promises that if you do it for at least 30 days, then it becomes natural. Now, any advice on practicing what you preach???

#eatsleepblogrt apparently us mums need an hour before the kids wake and the day begins…hitting snooze is banned, sounds impossible? First ween yourself off the snooze and then over a period of time wake 5mins earlier. Little steps to an awesome : organised mum 🙂

I might apply this rule to dad too…..

Yup, sounds so familiar! We always have a mad dash out of the house in the morning regardless of how ‘organised’ I try to be. #EatSleepBlogRT

Wear your coat over your dressing gown to save getting dressed at all.. assuming there’s time to go home and do it after dropping Willow …I used to do that

Thanks for reading and commenting. I have to go straight to work after dropping her off but I wouldn’t put it past me to forget to take my dressing gown off one day. I don’t think my colleagues would be surprised either!

I hate mornings. I’m like the original grumpy cat in need of coffee. Mind you, I did think, reading this, what’s your hubby doing whilst you are whirling around?

Hmmm good question! He leaves the house at 7:30am to get to work but you’re right there is def room for him to get involved in the morning ‘routine’
